You Wouldn’t Believe What People put in their Trash Chutes
People see a trash chute door and figure that ANYTHING can go inside of it. Not true.
Have you ever noticed that trash doors are almost always hinged along the bottom? This is on purpose so that the door can only swing out about 45°. This serves two purposes:
-So that users can not stuff something large enough to block the chute and cause garbage backups. Backups can cause a lot of structural damage and are sometimes very difficult to clear.
-So that it is more difficult for children and small adults to try to fit their bodies inside. Yes, people try to throw themselves down the trash chute all too often, sometimes resulting in serious injuries.
Other things that we have seen stuffed inside chute doors:
- Double carriage baby strollers for twins
- 22 Extra large pizza boxes (simultaneously!)
- A box with 81 lbs of used diapers
- An entire mannequin
- A six foot long palm tree, including the planter
So next time you look at your trash chute door, think of all the utility it provides and the little thanks it gets.
